President Bola Tinubu has committed himself and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to peaceful and transparent elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning political parties and their supporters against violence, hate speech, ethnic and religious sentiments, and the use of artificial intelligence to spread misinformation.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the call in Abuja during the signing of the National Peace Accord by presidential candidates and political parties.

The President urged politicians to make the 2027 campaign a contest of ideas, policies and programmes capable of improving the lives of Nigerians. He stressed that political disagreements are normal in a democracy but should not be allowed to threaten national unity and social cohesion.

Tinubu also warned against the exploitation of ethnic and religious divisions for political advantage. He called on political actors to reject violence, hate speech, incitement and misinformation, particularly fake content created or manipulated using artificial intelligence and circulated through social media.

He further reminded politicians that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair, stressing that Nigeria should remain the ultimate winner regardless of which candidate emerges victorious.

The National Peace Accord, organised by the National Peace Committee, is aimed at encouraging peaceful campaigns and responsible conduct before, during and after the 2027 elections.

The warning against AI-driven misinformation comes amid concerns that deepfake videos, manipulated images, fake audio recordings and other digitally generated content could be used to mislead voters, inflame political tensions and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Political parties and candidates are therefore expected to conduct their campaigns responsibly and allow Nigerians to make informed decisions based on credible information, policies and the track records of those seeking their votes.
