Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has expressed concern over absenteeism among local government chairmen and senior officials after conducting unannounced visits to several council secretariats.

The governor’s surprise inspection on Tuesday reportedly found many of the offices empty, with several council chairmen and top management staff absent from their places of duty.

Namadi described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that local government chairmen were elected to serve residents and should remain available to attend to official responsibilities.

The governor warned that local councils could not function effectively if elected officials continued to administer their councils remotely or through representatives.

He also recalled that he had previously warned the 27 local government chairmen against absenteeism and promised to sanction those found violating the directive.

Namadi said regular presence at the council secretariats was essential to effective grassroots administration and urged the chairmen to take their responsibilities seriously.

The development has renewed attention on accountability and service delivery at the local government level in Jigawa State.
