FCTA Pledges Urgent Action to Tackle Flooding in Affected Areas

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has pledged to intensify efforts to tackle flooding in areas affected by heavy rainfall, with authorities promising stronger preventive measures to protect residents, infrastructure and businesses across the territory.

The administration said it was concerned about the impact of flooding on communities and was taking steps to identify vulnerable locations, improve drainage systems and address obstructions that prevent the free flow of stormwater.

The commitment comes as the rainy season continues to increase the risk of flash floods in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly in areas where drainage infrastructure is inadequate or waterways have been obstructed by human activities.

Authorities have stressed the importance of clearing drainage channels and removing structures and other obstacles that could worsen flooding during periods of intense rainfall.

The administration is also expected to strengthen collaboration among relevant agencies responsible for environmental management, physical planning, road infrastructure and emergency response to ensure that flood related challenges are addressed more effectively.

Officials have urged residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels, noting that blocked waterways can quickly become overwhelmed when heavy rainfall occurs.

The administration also encouraged residents in flood prone communities to remain alert to weather warnings and take precautionary measures whenever there are indications of prolonged or intense rainfall.

Flooding has remained a recurring environmental challenge in several parts of the FCT, with the effects extending beyond residential areas to roads, commercial districts and other public infrastructure.

In some locations, intense rainfall can result in the rapid accumulation of water, disrupting movement and creating risks for motorists, pedestrians and businesses.

The FCTA has therefore emphasised the need for both government intervention and responsible behaviour by residents to reduce the severity of flooding.

As part of the response, authorities are expected to continue inspecting drainage infrastructure and waterways while identifying locations where urgent intervention is required.

Residents have also been advised against building on waterways and other areas designated as flood channels, as such developments can restrict natural water flow and increase the likelihood of flooding.

The administration said its approach would focus not only on responding to flooding after it occurs but also on preventive measures capable of reducing the vulnerability of communities.

The authorities maintained that sustained investment in drainage infrastructure, proper urban planning, regular environmental sanitation and effective enforcement of development regulations would be critical to addressing the problem.

With further rainfall expected during the season, the FCTA has assured residents that relevant agencies will continue monitoring vulnerable areas and respond to emerging flood threats.

The administration urged residents to cooperate with government agencies by keeping drainage channels clear and reporting blocked waterways or other conditions that could contribute to flooding.

It said the combined efforts of government agencies and residents would be necessary to minimise the impact of flooding and ensure safer communities across the Federal Capital Territory.
