Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called for peace and unity following his victory in the August 15 governorship election, while the All Progressives Congress, APC, is considering challenging the result at the election tribunal.
Adeleke was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after polling 511,067 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes. Adeleke won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.
Speaking after his victory, Adeleke extended an olive branch to his opponents, saying there was no victor or vanquished and that he remained governor for all residents of Osun State.
He also dedicated his victory to the people of the state and promised to consolidate his achievements while addressing areas where his administration had fallen short.
Meanwhile, the APC said it was studying the election results and consulting its lawyers before deciding whether to approach the tribunal. The party’s position could determine whether the outcome of the poll will face a legal challenge in the coming days.
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Adeleke on his victory and urged him to unite the people of Osun State.
