President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to restart Nigeria’s non functional state owned refineries, stressing that their success will be measured by productivity and profitability rather than simply resuming operations.
Tinubu made this known on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while receiving the Executive President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Salimon Oladiti, and other union members.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the President said the government was working on a firm reset and structural reform of the economy, adding that the return of the refineries must deliver real economic value.
Tinubu also urged operators using compressed natural gas to pass the savings from CNG adoption to commuters, rather than retaining the benefits entirely.
He linked the availability of funding for major road projects to the economic reforms of his administration, citing the Lagos Ibadan, Abuja Kaduna, Abuja Kano and Sokoto Badagry roads among projects receiving attention.
On fuel subsidy removal, Tinubu maintained that the policy would not be reversed despite threats of industrial action, saying the reforms were necessary to improve the country’s finances.
The President said he had accepted responsibility for fixing the economy and pledged that his administration would continue working to deliver better economic conditions for Nigerians.
