Abia State Government has renewed its commitment to expanding renewable energy deployment in the state after engaging the Rural Electrification Agency on measures to revive projects delayed by implementation challenges.
Governor Alex Otti made the commitment during a meeting with a delegation from the Rural Electrification Agency, the Ministry of Finance Incorporated and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles at the Government House in Umuahia.
The governor said Abia had significant potential to make progress in renewable energy development and assured the delegation that outstanding issues responsible for delays in implementing existing agreements would be addressed.
Otti also indicated that the state would move quickly to identify and pursue projects capable of delivering immediate benefits to communities and businesses. He said the government would appoint a state focal person to improve coordination between Abia and the relevant federal agencies.
The engagement is expected to strengthen cooperation between the state and the Federal Government in the development of clean energy infrastructure, particularly projects targeted at communities and areas with inadequate access to electricity.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, said the agency had mapped communities across the country requiring rural electrification and was working to expand access through renewable energy solutions.
Aliyu disclosed that about 1,000 mini grids were currently being deployed across different states as part of efforts to improve electricity access in underserved and unserved communities.
He said the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the REA and Abia State in 2025 had experienced delays in implementation but stressed that the agency remained prepared to support the state once it demonstrated renewed commitment to the projects.
The renewed engagement builds on an earlier strategic partnership between Abia and the REA aimed at developing the state’s renewable energy sector and creating opportunities for private sector participation. The agreement signed in 2025 focused on building a sustainable electricity market in the state through renewable energy innovation.
Abia has increasingly positioned renewable energy as part of its broader strategy to improve electricity supply, support businesses and promote sustainable economic development. The state has also made progress with electric mobility initiatives, including the deployment of electric buses.
The renewed partnership could therefore provide an avenue for the state to accelerate investment in solar power, mini grids and other clean energy projects while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
For businesses and households, improved access to reliable electricity could help reduce operating costs, strengthen productivity and support economic activities in communities that have historically faced inadequate power supply.
The initiative also comes as Nigeria continues to expand its off grid electricity programme in response to the need for additional generation and distribution solutions. Renewable energy projects are increasingly being used to provide electricity to communities that are difficult or costly to connect to the conventional national grid.
The REA’s ongoing mini grid programme is expected to play an important role in this effort, with private developers participating in the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure across several states.
For Abia, the immediate priority will be translating the renewed commitment into actual project implementation. The state government is expected to work with the REA to resolve outstanding administrative and technical issues and establish a clearer framework for delivering the projects.
The renewed partnership signals a fresh effort by both sides to move beyond agreements and discussions towards practical implementation of renewable energy projects that can expand electricity access and support economic development.
