Super Falcons Target Quarter-Final Spot in Decisive Egypt Clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will battle Egypt in a decisive Group C encounter at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, with qualification for the quarter-finals firmly in their sights after a mixed start to their title defence in Morocco.

The 10-time African champions endured a disappointing opening match, suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi before bouncing back with a determined 1-0 victory over Zambia despite playing with 10 players for most of the contest.

That crucial win revived Nigeria’s campaign, leaving the Falcons on three points ahead of their final group fixture against the North Africans.

A victory over Egypt would lift Nigeria to six points, but their progression to the knockout stage could still depend on the outcome of the simultaneous encounter between Malawi and Zambia.

Head coach Justine Madugu faces another selection dilemma after losing two key players to suspension. Defender Oluwatosin Demehin will miss the match following her red card against Zambia, while midfielder Jennifer Echegini is also unavailable after accumulating two yellow cards during the group stage.

Madugu is expected to reshuffle his squad once again, with Christy Ucheibe likely to continue in central defence alongside the experienced Osinachi Ohale after impressing following Demehin’s dismissal. In midfield, Toni Payne is expected to partner captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde as Nigeria seeks greater control in possession.

In attack, Uchenna Kanu could retain her place alongside Asisat Oshoala after both forwards made decisive contributions in the opening two matches. Oshoala scored the winner against Zambia, while Kanu found the net late against Malawi as the Falcons attempted a comeback.

Egypt enter the encounter without a point after suffering heavy defeats to Zambia and Malawi, but the Nigerian camp has insisted they will not underestimate their opponents despite their difficult campaign.

The final round of Group C matches promises a dramatic finish. Malawi currently lead the standings with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia both have three. Should Nigeria defeat Egypt and Zambia overcome Malawi, all three teams would finish level on six points.

In that scenario, the Confederation of African Football’s competition regulations would be used to separate the tied teams, with head-to-head results, goal difference and other tie-breaking criteria determining the two nations that advance to the quarter-finals.

With an 11th continental title still within reach, the Super Falcons know that victory against Egypt is the minimum requirement to keep their championship ambitions alive.
