Tinubu, Atiku and Obi Consider Former Governors for 2027 Campaign Director General Positions

Political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections are gathering momentum, with President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reportedly considering experienced former governors for key campaign leadership positions.

Sources familiar with the ongoing consultations said the camps of the three leading political figures are evaluating several former state governors for possible appointment as Directors General of their respective presidential campaign organisations. The move is aimed at strengthening campaign structures and leveraging the political experience and grassroots networks of former governors.

Political analysts noted that the position of campaign Director General is regarded as one of the most strategic roles in any presidential campaign, with responsibility for coordinating political activities, managing campaign operations, mobilising support and overseeing nationwide electoral strategies.

According to observers, former governors are often considered for such positions because of their administrative experience, established political structures and influence within their parties and regions. Their involvement could also enhance fundraising efforts, stakeholder engagement and coordination across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

While none of the political camps has officially confirmed any appointment, insiders indicated that consultations remain ongoing as political leaders seek individuals capable of leading effective and inclusive campaign organisations ahead of the election season.

Analysts believe the eventual selection of campaign Directors General could shape early political alignments and signal the strategic direction each presidential hopeful intends to pursue. They added that the appointments may also influence coalition building, party mobilisation and voter outreach as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.

Political stakeholders have, however, urged aspirants and their supporters to conduct their activities in accordance with the Electoral Act and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission, emphasising the importance of issue based campaigns and peaceful political engagement.

With more than a year before the next general elections, political parties are expected to intensify consultations, strengthen internal structures and position themselves for what is anticipated to be another highly competitive presidential contest.
