Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed that Canada will do “whatever it takes” to defend its economy in the escalating trade dispute with the United States, promising to respond firmly to any further measures imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

Carney said on Thursday, July 23, that his government would continue protecting Canadian workers, businesses and industries as trade tensions with the United States intensify. He stressed that Canada remained committed to negotiations but would not hesitate to take additional action if necessary.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come after a series of trade measures and tariff threats from the Trump administration that have strained relations between the two long standing allies. Carney said Canada would pursue every available option, including retaliatory measures, while continuing efforts to secure a negotiated settlement.

Carney said maintaining open trade with the United States remains important because of the deep economic ties between the two countries, but added that Canada would not accept policies that unfairly harm Canadian exporters or workers. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to diversifying trade and strengthening economic resilience.

Officials from both countries have continued discussions aimed at resolving the dispute, but significant differences remain over tariffs and broader trade policy. Analysts said prolonged tensions could disrupt supply chains, increase costs for businesses and consumers, and affect investment across North America.

The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner, with hundreds of billions of dollars in goods and services crossing the border each year. Economists warn that an extended trade conflict could have significant consequences for both economies.
