New Laws and Arrests Deepen Rift Between Burkina Faso’s Military Government and Muslim Scholars

Burkina Faso’s military government is facing growing criticism from members of the country’s Muslim community after introducing new legislation and detaining several Islamic scholars, moves that have widened tensions between the authorities and influential religious leaders.

According to Al Jazeera, the measures have sparked concern among Muslim clerics, who argue that the government’s increasing oversight of religious affairs and the arrests of respected scholars risk undermining trust at a time when Burkina Faso is battling one of the region’s deadliest armed insurgencies.

The administration of Captain Ibrahim Traoré has defended the new legislation as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and prevent extremist groups from exploiting religious institutions. Officials maintain that the measures are aimed at safeguarding public order rather than restricting religious freedoms.

However, Muslim leaders and rights advocates say the arrests of several clerics have created unease within the community, with some questioning whether the government’s security approach is alienating religious figures who have traditionally played an important role in promoting peace and countering extremist narratives.

Analysts say the growing tensions present a significant challenge for the military led government, which has relied on support from local communities in its campaign against armed groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State operating across the Sahel. They warn that strained relations with religious leaders could weaken efforts to build public confidence and combat radicalisation.

Burkina Faso has experienced persistent insecurity and political instability since military coups in 2022, with violence continuing to spread despite intensified military operations. The government has pledged to restore security while maintaining dialogue with religious and traditional leaders.
