Canada has cancelled plans for a joint ceremony with the United States marking the completion of a major cross-border bridge project, citing escalating trade tensions following new tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Canadian officials said the decision was made after Trump’s administration announced additional trade measures targeting Canadian exports, creating a strained diplomatic atmosphere that made a joint celebration inappropriate. The event had been expected to bring together senior officials from both countries to commemorate the infrastructure project.
The bridge, designed to strengthen trade and transportation links between Canada and the United States, is regarded as a key piece of infrastructure supporting billions of dollars in annual cross border commerce. Canadian officials stressed that while the project remains a symbol of economic cooperation, current trade disagreements have overshadowed the planned celebrations.
The cancellation comes as Ottawa and Washington continue negotiations over tariffs and broader trade issues. Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to intensify discussions with the Trump administration in an effort to resolve the disputes while protecting Canadian industries and jobs.
