The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and its development partners have pledged support for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in implementing its 2026 disability inclusion plan, reinforcing efforts to promote equal opportunities and improve the welfare of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
The commitment was made during a stakeholders’ engagement focused on advancing disability inclusion, where participants underscored the importance of coordinated action in ensuring that people living with disabilities are fully integrated into national development programmes.
The 2026 strategy is expected to strengthen policies that promote accessibility, inclusive education, healthcare, employment opportunities and social protection for persons with disabilities. It also seeks to improve institutional capacity and encourage greater collaboration among government agencies, development organisations and civil society groups.
Representatives of ECOWAS reaffirmed the regional body’s commitment to supporting initiatives that uphold the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, noting that inclusive development remains a key pillar of sustainable growth across West Africa.
Development partners also expressed their readiness to provide technical assistance, capacity-building support and strategic collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the commission’s objectives.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities said the support from ECOWAS and its partners would enhance the commission’s ability to deliver programmes aimed at reducing barriers faced by persons with disabilities and expanding their participation in education, employment and public life.
Stakeholders stressed that meaningful inclusion requires strong legislation, adequate funding and sustained public awareness to eliminate discrimination and create an environment where every citizen can contribute to national development regardless of physical or intellectual ability.
The renewed partnership is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s efforts to implement disability-friendly policies while aligning with regional and international commitments on human rights and inclusive development. Observers believe the collaboration will further strengthen advocacy for equal access to opportunities and improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities.
