Nigeria’s crude oil production has risen to its highest level in more than six years, surpassing the production quota allocated by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), according to Punch.
The report said the latest production figures represent a significant turnaround for the country’s oil industry following sustained efforts to improve output through enhanced security measures, increased operational efficiency and the restoration of key production facilities.
The increase places Nigeria above its OPEC production target, a development expected to strengthen the country’s position in the global oil market while boosting government revenue and foreign exchange earnings.
According to the report, industry stakeholders attributed the improved production to ongoing efforts by the Federal Government, security agencies and oil companies to tackle crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and other operational challenges that had constrained output in recent years.
Energy analysts believe the higher production level could further enhance investor confidence in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector, particularly as authorities continue to implement reforms aimed at attracting fresh investment and expanding production capacity.
The report noted that stronger crude output is expected to provide additional fiscal support for the economy through increased export earnings and improved public revenue, especially as the government pursues policies to stabilise the macroeconomic environment.
Despite the positive development, experts cautioned that sustaining production above the OPEC quota will depend on continued investment in oil infrastructure, effective pipeline surveillance and a stable regulatory environment. They warned that renewed incidents of oil theft or production disruptions could reverse the gains recorded.
According to Punch, the latest production performance reflects growing resilience within Nigeria’s oil industry and signals progress in efforts to restore the country’s standing among leading crude oil producers. Analysts expressed optimism that maintaining the current momentum could support economic growth and strengthen confidence in the nation’s energy sector.
