The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two suspects over the alleged vandalism of a streetlight cable in Gwaram Local Government Area and an electricity transformer in Auyo Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

One of the suspects, Aminu Musa, 38, from New Gwaram Town, was arrested on September 25 at about 1 a.m. while allegedly cutting an armoured cable connected to a streetlight. Police said the suspect operated a streetlight generator in the area. Officers visited the scene and recovered exhibits before the case was taken to court for prosecution.

In a separate incident, residents apprehended 26-year-old Laminu Sha’aibu of Gumusuwa Village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area at Maskangayu Village, Auyo, on September 29. He was allegedly found with coils removed from a vandalised electricity transformer.

Police said officers rescued Sha’aibu after receiving reports that an angry mob was threatening to attack him. He was taken to a nearby primary healthcare centre, treated and discharged. The dismantled transformer was also recovered.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly said he had spent three nights dismantling the transformer without being detected. Police said both cases had been charged before the appropriate court.

Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala commended residents who provided information leading to the arrests and urged the public to report suspicious activities involving electricity installations and other public infrastructure.
