The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested an 83-year-old woman in Abia State for alleged drug trafficking, less than a year after she and her daughter were convicted of drug-related offences.
The suspect, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area. The agency said operatives recovered methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, allegedly concealed around her waist with a wrapper.
According to the NDLEA, the arrest followed intelligence reports that she was operating a drug joint allegedly frequented by criminal elements accused of terrorising the community.
The agency said Uloma and her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, were previously arrested at the same residence on May 17, 2025. During that operation, officers recovered methamphetamine, skunk, fresh cannabis leaves and tramadol.
Both women pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with an option of paying a ₦200,000 fine each. They paid the fines and were released.
The latest arrest formed part of a series of operations conducted by the NDLEA between October 4 and 9, resulting in additional arrests and substantial drug seizures across several states.
Other operations included the arrest of a South African woman at Port Harcourt International Airport with 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis and the interception of 354,000 tapentadol tablets at Lagos airport.
The agency said it would continue intelligence-led operations to disrupt drug trafficking networks and prevent the distribution of illicit substances.
