The National Pension Commission (PenCom) says its ongoing Pension 2.0 reforms are designed to remove barriers to pension participation and extend financial inclusion to more Nigerians.
PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran said the reforms are built around three principles: innovation, inclusion and integrity. She made the remarks during the commission’s 2026 Customer Service Week seminar in Abuja.
The reforms are intended to make pension services more accessible to workers across the formal and informal sectors while improving customer service and confidence in the retirement savings system.
PenCom has also introduced measures aimed at bringing groups that have traditionally had limited access to pension schemes into the system. These include self-employed workers, informal-sector participants and Nigerians living or working abroad.
One of the measures provides a framework for Nigerians working for foreign companies and Nigerians abroad to participate in the Contributory Pension Scheme through retirement savings accounts denominated in foreign currency.
The commission said the broader objective is to ensure that more Nigerians can build retirement savings while receiving more efficient and responsive services from pension operators.
The reforms come as Nigeria seeks to deepen long-term savings and broaden participation in the financial system, particularly among workers outside the traditional formal employment structure.
