FIFA has endorsed Nigeria’s plans to reform the administration of football in the country, following discussions between Nigerian officials and the world football governing body in Zurich, Switzerland.

National Sports Commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, disclosed this after meeting with FIFA and Confederation of African Football officials. He said the reforms followed the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation leadership and were aimed at restructuring the administration of Nigerian football.

Dikko said FIFA would determine whether a normalisation committee should be established to oversee the transition and implement the agreed reforms. According to him, such a committee would be independent, have clear terms of reference and operate within a defined timeframe.

He explained that the committee, if established, could remain in place for between six months and one year, depending on the scope of reforms agreed with stakeholders. Members would also be expected to have no interest in contesting future NFF elections.

The proposed reforms are expected to include changes to the NFF electoral system, with greater emphasis on transparency and accountability. Consultations with NFF Congress members and other football stakeholders are ongoing, while FIFA is expected to continue engaging Nigerian officials on the reform roadmap.

The development comes amid efforts to resolve the leadership crisis within the NFF and establish a new administrative structure for Nigerian football.
