Global markets were mixed on Tuesday as renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence lifted technology shares, while higher oil prices and bond yields weighed on broader investor sentiment.
Technology stocks gained after strong market interest in Meta Platforms’ Muse AI assistant helped push the company’s shares more than 11% higher on Monday. Semiconductor companies also benefited, with AMD reaching a $1 trillion valuation, while Intel and Arm Holdings recorded strong gains.
However, the broader European equity market struggled, with the STOXX 600 falling 0.2%. Rising energy prices remained a major concern, with Brent crude climbing 1.4% to $101.67 a barrel after briefly dropping below $100 in the previous session.
Investors are also watching the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with hopes that the two countries can extend their existing trade truce and potentially cooperate on artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, higher oil prices and expectations of further interest-rate increases pushed bond yields higher. The US 10-year Treasury yield approached 4.969%, while the dollar strengthened against several major currencies.
The developments highlight the competing forces currently shaping global markets: strong technology investment on one side and renewed inflation and interest-rate concerns on the other.
