President Bola Tinubu has departed Abuja for Europe to begin a three-week vacation as part of his 2026 annual leave.
The President’s departure was announced by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said Tinubu’s first destination would be London, United Kingdom.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the working vacation to participate in preparations for the January 2027 election.
However, the Presidency has not publicly clarified whether Vice President Kashim Shettima has been formally designated to serve as Acting President during Tinubu’s absence.
The development has generated attention because previous presidential vacations have sometimes been accompanied by formal notifications to the National Assembly transferring presidential powers to the Vice President.
Meanwhile, Shettima is scheduled to represent Tinubu at an African Union summit in Angola, according to reports.
Tinubu’s three-week absence comes amid ongoing security, economic and political developments in the country, as his administration continues preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
