Several people were injured on Friday after a person armed with a sword attacked a high school in Fagersta, central Sweden, authorities said.
Fagersta municipality said police responded to reports of ongoing deadly violence at the school. One person was taken into custody, while police deployed several resources to the scene and established roadblocks around the area.
Authorities urged members of the public to avoid the area, respect police cordons and follow instructions from emergency personnel as the investigation continued.
Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said the government was in close contact with police following what he described as a serious incident.
Police had not immediately released details about the number or severity of injuries, the identity of the suspect or a possible motive for the attack.
The incident prompted a major emergency response as authorities worked to secure the school and establish the circumstances surrounding the violence.
