United Nigeria Airlines has pledged N20 million over the next 10 years to support the annual Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction, in a move aimed at ensuring the continued recognition of literary excellence in Nigeria.
The airline’s Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, announced the commitment following discussions with the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr Usman Akanbi.
Under the arrangement, United Nigeria Airlines will provide N2 million annually to the Association of Nigerian Authors for the next decade, bringing the total value of the sponsorship to N20 million. The long term commitment is expected to provide greater financial stability for the literary award and reduce its dependence on changing government sponsorship.
The Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction was established in 2021 by the Anambra State Government in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Authors to honour the legacy of the late renowned Nigerian novelist and promote outstanding literary works.
The award initially received N1 million in sponsorship under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano. The succeeding administration under Governor Chukwuma Soludo continued the support and agreed to increase the sponsorship to N2 million, partly in response to rising costs associated with inflation and the administration of the award.
However, organisers said the state government’s financial support subsequently became uncertain, creating concerns over the continued sustainability of the prize.
The development prompted United Nigeria Airlines to intervene and provide a long term sponsorship arrangement that would keep the award running regardless of changes in government priorities.
Okonkwo said the decision was motivated by the importance of Chinua Achebe’s contribution to African literature and Nigeria’s cultural identity.
He described Achebe as a figure whose writings, intellectual contributions and public interventions brought international attention to Africa and helped shape conversations about Nigerian society, identity and leadership.
The ANA president expressed appreciation for the airline’s intervention, describing it as a significant contribution towards preserving Achebe’s literary legacy and supporting the development of Nigerian literature.
Akanbi also noted Okonkwo’s previous efforts to honour the late author, including his role in financing the construction of a statue of Achebe in Ogidi, Anambra State, the writer’s hometown.
The latest sponsorship adds to United Nigeria Airlines’ recent efforts to preserve and promote Achebe’s legacy. In June, the airline named one of its newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after Chinua Achebe, while another aircraft was named after Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.
The airline’s intervention is expected to provide the Association of Nigerian Authors with the financial certainty required to continue organising the annual prize and recognising writers who demonstrate exceptional creativity in fiction.
The sponsorship also highlights the growing role of private sector organisations in supporting Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries, particularly at a time when funding remains a major challenge for many literary and cultural initiatives.
For the literary community, a stable funding arrangement could strengthen the credibility and continuity of the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction while encouraging emerging Nigerian writers to pursue excellence in literature.
The 10 year commitment by United Nigeria Airlines is therefore expected to ensure that the award remains a lasting platform for celebrating Nigerian fiction and preserving the memory of one of Africa’s most influential literary figures.
