The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has sealed Quantum Packaging Nigeria Limited, a paper processing company located along the Lusada Igbesa Road in Agbara, Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area, over alleged illegal waste disposal and open air burning.
The authority announced the enforcement action in a statement issued on Monday, saying the company allegedly violated provisions of the OGWAMA Law 2020 and the Ogun State Environmental and Public Health Law 2006.
According to the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, the company was identified during surveillance operations targeting facilities suspected of committing environmental violations.
The Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Mr Farouk Akintunde, said the company had previously been warned against indiscriminate waste disposal after a familiarisation visit revealed that waste was being dumped within its premises instead of being handed over to government accredited waste collectors.
Akintunde said subsequent surveillance allegedly revealed that the company was operating a large dumpsite near its factory, where waste was also being burnt.
He said the alleged activities posed serious risks to the environment and public health, particularly because of the dangers associated with open air waste burning.
The OGWAMA boss said the state government remained committed to protecting the environment while maintaining a business friendly environment for companies operating in Ogun State.
He, however, stressed that businesses would not be allowed to operate at the expense of public health and environmental safety.
Akintunde said Quantum Packaging Nigeria Limited would remain sealed until it stopped operating the alleged illegal dumpsite and submitted a remediation plan for the removal of the accumulated waste.
