MBABANE — The Kingdom of Eswatini has launched an ambitious road infrastructure programme aimed at reducing travel time and transportation costs while accelerating economic growth and improving livelihoods in rural communities. The initiative is expected to modernise the country’s road network by upgrading key transport corridors that connect agricultural production areas, markets and essential public services.
Government officials said the programme forms part of Eswatini’s broader development strategy to strengthen infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and create an enabling environment for investment and sustainable economic growth. According to the authorities, the road upgrades will significantly reduce travel time for commuters and businesses, lowering the cost of transporting agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other commodities across the country.
The programme is also expected to improve access to schools, healthcare facilities and commercial centres, particularly for residents of remote and underserved communities. Officials noted that better road infrastructure would enhance the movement of people and goods, making it easier for farmers to transport produce to markets while reducing post-harvest losses and logistics costs.
The government said improved transport connectivity would encourage private-sector investment, stimulate trade and support the growth of rural enterprises, particularly those involved in agriculture and agro-processing. Construction activities under the programme are also expected to create employment opportunities for local communities through road building, engineering services and related industries.
Development experts believe the investment will strengthen Eswatini’s competitiveness by improving the efficiency of its transport system and enhancing links with neighbouring countries and regional markets. The project is expected to promote inclusive economic development by opening up rural areas to greater commercial activity, tourism and public services.
Officials added that improved roads would contribute to safer transportation by reducing vehicle operating costs, improving road conditions and enhancing accessibility throughout the country. The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that infrastructure development supports national economic transformation while improving the quality of life for citizens.
Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing modern transport infrastructure as essential for unlocking agricultural potential, supporting industrial development and attracting new investment. The programme also aligns with Eswatini’s long-term vision of building resilient infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable development, regional integration and economic diversification.
Once completed, the upgraded road network is expected to transform rural economies by improving market access, reducing travel times, lowering transport costs and creating new opportunities for businesses and communities across the country.
