Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the United States of repeatedly violating its commitments, saying the breaches demonstrate that agreements signed by President Donald Trump are “worthless” and cannot be trusted.
Speaking during a televised address, Khamenei said Washington’s actions had reinforced Tehran’s long-held position that the United States cannot be relied upon to honor its promises. He argued that repeated U.S. withdrawals from agreements and military actions against Iran had undermined any basis for confidence in future negotiations.
“The Americans violate their commitments with ease,” Khamenei said. “Their behavior has shown that Trump’s signature is worthless.”
His remarks came amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington following an exchange of military strikes that has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts to revive dialogue between the two countries have largely stalled as both sides trade accusations over responsibility for the recent escalation.
Iranian officials have maintained that the United States has consistently failed to uphold its obligations under previous agreements, particularly the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Although Trump withdrew the United States from the accord during his first term in office, Iranian leaders argue that subsequent U.S. policies have continued to reflect a pattern of broken commitments.
Khamenei reiterated that Iran would not negotiate under military pressure or threats, insisting that any future talks would require tangible guarantees that Washington would honor its commitments.
The White House has defended its approach toward Iran, saying its military actions are intended to protect U.S. forces and allies in the region while preventing Tehran from advancing activities that Washington considers destabilizing. U.S. officials have also said diplomacy remains possible if Iran is willing to address concerns over its nuclear programme and regional activities.
The latest exchange of rhetoric underscores the deep mistrust that continues to define relations between the two countries. Analysts say Khamenei’s comments are likely to harden Iran’s negotiating position and complicate any efforts to restart diplomatic engagement.
Regional governments and international organizations have urged both sides to exercise restraint, warning that continued military escalation could threaten stability across the Middle East and disrupt global energy markets.
Despite growing international calls for dialogue, prospects for renewed negotiations remain uncertain as both Washington and Tehran continue to insist that the other side must change its approach before meaningful diplomacy can resume.
